US Defends Anti-Gay
Rights Stance on UN's Anti-Discrimination Resolution

26: The United States
defended its decision not to support a resolution at the UN Human Rights
Commission would that have condemned discrimination against homosexuals. The
resolution, which
was actively opposed by
some Arab nations and suffered from the US refusal to back it was put off until
had come to a vote
because it did not believe the commission was the correct forum for the matter
to be discussed.

Rights Fails To Act On Gay Rights Proposal

26: After three days of
heated debate, United Nations Commission on Human Rights, meeting in Geneva,
failed to
vote on expanding the world
body's definition of discrimination to include based on
sexual orientation. The
proposal put forward by Brazil and supported by Canada, South Africa and most
of the European Union.
The resolution was the first of its kind in United Nations
history.

25: Amid intense debate on
gay rights in state and local governments throughout the United States,
the U.N. Commission on
Human Rights is preparing to vote on a resolution calling on all countries "to
promote and protect human
rights of all persons
regardless of their sexual orientation." A vote on the measure, sponsored by
Brazil, before the
52-member commission's, is expected to take place April
25.
