Record on
Issues:
Pam Iorio's record exhibits exceptionally
strong support for prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and
inclusion of sexual orientation, in the human rights ordinance, as a
protected group. In
1992, the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County
Commission held joint public hearings on a proposal
to include sexual orientation in both the
cities and counties Human Rights Ordinance. This proposal was
a monumental step forward for gay, lesbian and
bisexual equality and was strongly opposed by religious
and anti-gay organizations. Pam was outspoken
in support for the proposal and her vote was instrumental
in the decision to include sexual orientation as a protected group in the areas of
employment, housing and public accommodations in the
Hillsborough County Human Rights Ordinance.
However, efforts to repeal the
counties inclusion of sex orientation in their human rights ordinance were
successful, after newly elected commissioners opposing the inclusion, out
numbered supporters. The City of Tampa council members withstood repeal
efforts and inclusion of sexual orientation remains
apart of their Human Rights Ordinance.
And, as Mayor of the City of Tampa, Pam would
continue her support to retain sexual orientation as apart Human Rights
Ordinance.
As Mayor:
Pam supports specific training regarding sexual
orientation in diversity training programs for public
employees Gays, Lesbians, Bisexual and Transgender citizens. A policy of non-discrimination
and equality
in the treatment
of people of all ethnic, racial, religious, gender and
sexual orientation. Domestic partnership benefits that would allow unmarried
public employees to designate a beneficiary for programs
including pension, health and life insurance benefits. Supports the philosophy
of a city-wide domestic partnership
registry.
Pam Iorio's public support and voting record on issues of
importance to us. Has helped to advance us closer to our dream of equality
and to end discrimination based ones sexual orientation. TBC is pleased to
public endorse Pam Iorio for Mayor of the City
of Tampa. TBC strongly believes, with Pam Iorio as our next Mayor, we
can look forward to a brighter and much more positive future. One where we can
feel that
the Mayor of the City of Tampa, is a Mayor for all of
the people, including the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual
members of the community. It's been awhile since we can
say this and something to look forward when we actually can.
Please, Cast Your Vote for Pam Iorio for Mayor
of the City of Tampa on Tuesday, March 4,
2003.
