Berkeley students joined a sea of nearly 1,000 somber faces Friday for the
funeral of Eddie "Gwen" Araujo, a 17-year-old transgenderist killed earlier this
month. Despite plans by
the UC Berkeley group Cal
Queers for Social Justice to prevent known anti-gay preacher Rev. Fred Phelps
from attending the funeral, neither Phelps nor any anti-gay protesters
showed up.

filled a church in Newark, California Friday afternoon for the funeral of 17
year old Gwen Araujo. "The killing has pulled us together as a
community," Newark Police Lt. Tom Milner told 365Gay.Com, "It's opened a lot of

fourth man in the beating and strangling of a 17-year-old,
transgendered teen who went to a party dressed as a girl.
Police believe a fight broke out at the party after Araujo's biological sex was
discovered and are still trying to piece together what
happened.

worked up the courage to come out to his family. He started to call himself Gwen
and lived as a young woman, growing long hair, wearing crop-tops and
women's jeans. He dreamed of becoming a famous Hollywood makeup
artist.
