Anti-gay Broward group seeks funding

By BETH REINHARD

A group trying to fend off a petition drive to repeal Broward's gay rights law is holding a $50-per-person fundraiser July 19 at the Paradise club in Fort Lauderdale.

Besides garnering money for its campaign, Americans For Equality: Empower Broward is asking stores such as Wal-Mart and Publix to bar petitioners from collecting signatures on their properties. For more information, go to www.americansforequality.org.

``Our task is to reach those Broward citizens before they are duped into unintentionally signing petitions aimed at denying civil rights to gays and lesbians,'' said the group's chairwoman, Robin Bodiford, in an e-mail to supporters. ``To do that we need money, and lots of it.''

Leaders of the petition drive say they are not misleading the public by asking people who support the Boy Scouts for signatures. Local governments and school boards have cited the Scouts' ban against gay men when denying funding or use of public buildings.
