Shane's Bio
Raised in the South with a strict military
upbringing, charismatic 20-year-old Shane grew up moving from place to place.
Eventually, he got used to forming two-year friendships and cutting his losses.
Shane was humiliated in high school for his feminine qualities, and it wasn't
until he got to the University of North Carolina that he became more outgoing
and was able to gradually admit he was gay. Though he has somewhat freed himself
of the secret he once guarded so well, Shane still lives with the fear that he
has failed to live up to his family's aspirations. Unfortuantely, the emotional
detachment and turbulent childhood has left its mark on Shane. Constantly
craving affection, he is hampered by his distrust of anyone who wants to get
close to him.
So, I have
traveled most of my life, lived in a lot of different places. I was born in
Savannah, Georgia, but most of my family lives in Texas and Arkansas. Pretty
much every two years my dad would get new orders to move somewhere else, and we
would up and move with him. Just for those confused that I have two dads, I
don't believe in that whole step-dad bulls***. Both my fathers raised me
regardless of biology and marriage and that makes them both my dads. My whole
family is my universe, I couldn't imagine growing up and not being close to your
parents, I swear my family members are my best friends. So anyways, I lived in a
lot of places, I got to grow up in some of the most amazing towns and make the
coolest friends--it really opened me up to a lot of things.
On
sexuality, life is pretty f***ing crazy. I know I was born gay, I can remember
it from the time I was around six to right now that something was going on with
me. I do remember thinking that everyone felt like I did and they just dealt
with it. Ha, I was wrong as hell, but really didn't start figuring that s*** out
until college. Up until then I had some random relationships with two guys and
some girls and a really meaningful one with a girl who means a lot to me.
However, you can't escape who you are no matter how hard you pray. And it got to
the point where I said: God is only going to take this away from me when I lose
total sexual desire. Seeing how long it would be 'til I turned forty, I decided
to do the only thing I could. Accept reality and deal with it. God, what a
life-changing thing. Of course it was hard, for about two minutes, but once I
was no longer my number one enemy my entire life changed. I actually felt good
about living for one; second, I developed this thing called confidence that I
pretty much hadn't seen since I was about ten years old.
What's really
funny is that once I came out to myself and pretty much everyone else,
everything I took for granted in sexuality as true and real pretty much went
away and what was left was people. Just plain old people who are individual and
separate in how they view sexuality and how they act on it. So make your labels,
and stick me there and stick your friends there and stick yourself there, but
realize this: you're only cutting yourself short when you do that. Once I faced
myself and dealt with who I thought I was, I found out that life is f***ing
amazing and no matter how angry I get at it, I will always appreciate who I am
and the gift of sexual freedom that I have been given.

Taking the
Plunge

on a yellow school bus somewhere in the backwoods of North Carolina. We quickly
meet everyone and find out that Darrell likes to box, Rachel thinks that she’s
been put in some kind of fraternity/sorority House, Eric thinks Kendal is hot,
Kendal likes to wear a furry coat, Sarah doesn’t like girls and Shane 'likes the
girls but really likes the guys.'
The gang’s first mission is called the
Polar Plunge. They must dive into nearly freezing water to recover the keys that
will open the Woodie. The guys all get down to their skivvies and Sarah and
Kendal take off their shirts and the crowd around them delights in their
nakedness. Shane doesn’t pay attention to their instructions and jumps in the
pond early dragging just about everyone else in and they all swim frantically to
get the keys.
Once they are inside the RV, they learn that they will be
visiting college campuses all over the United States. They also learn that if
they fail missions they will have the option to either give up their prizes or
vote a teammate off. Rachel and Kendal are both uncomfortable with the rule.
They didn’t come to win prizes, they came to have fun. Rachel suggests that they
make a pact that they will always vote to get rid of their prizes. Shane pipes
in and says, “But what if we win cars?” They decide to wait on making that kind
of decision until they see what kind of prizes they are going to win.
That night, Eric and Kendal end up sleeping on the pull out bed in the
main part of the woodie, while Shane is asleep on the floor in a sleeping bag.
While the lights are out, Shane whispers, “What are ya’ll doing…I heard the
sheets rustling, I know what was going on.” Eric offers that if Shane wants to
come up and cuddle, he can. They joke about the flirting going on between Eric
and Kendal and Shane offers that he will be their human chastity
belt.
Their next mission is Lean On Me. It’s a kind of extreme Trust
exercise. The group must go in pairs across a wire walk 108 feet above the
ground. Rachel and Shane go first and successfully make it across. Sarah and
Darrell are next and because Sarah isn’t ready to trust anyone on this trip yet,
they fall. Eric and Kendal go next and then they fall as well. In the heat of
the moment, Kendal kisses Eric as they descend to the ground. Darrell and Sarah
get their second and final shot at the wire walk and fall again failing the
mission.

Shane
holds a new postion in the group.

roll onto the Clark-Atlanta campus to find out that not only will they once
again be competing for the elusive $6,000, but that they will also be competing
against another team. Once again, MTV.com has fielded a group of six whose soul
mission is to bring down the Roadies. There's no love in this game as the de
facto leader of the Dot-commers, Sam, asks the RR squad if they are ready to
lose.
The mission itself is a step competition being hosted by hip-hop's
dynamic duo, Outkast. Each team has to come up with a step routine that will be
judged by members of the CAU Greek organizations. Shane isn't taking the mission
seriously and is constantly messing up while they go through the grueling
practices. It's perhaps not the best time for him to start taking things
lightly, as he has found himself in Sarah's old position as the outsider of the
group. Shane is uncomfortable with the coupling up that has gone on in the RV
and is maybe taking it out on the others a bit, making snarky comments about his
teammates. When he and Eric go to spy on the Dot-com team, though, Shane
realizes that the competition is going to be tough and spends the night
practicing (to the approval of the rest of the team).
With a full
auditorium as their audience, both teams perform. The Dot-commers succeed at
getting the crowd hyped, and what they lack in synchronization and grace, they
make up for in fun and energy. The Road Rulers are nervous about their
performance, but come out strong. While not as crowd-pleasing, their performance
is a bit crisper and a lot more intricate, and they get bonus points for much
man-nakedness. The RR team wins by 1 point and goes home with the dough. After a
great show by Outkast, the two teams decide to go on a night on the town
together, letting bygones be bygones.
Shane's health is in
jeopardy.

Having squeaked past the
Dot-commers in Atlanta, the Road Rulers seem poised to become a complete team,
with everyone a full-fledged member and no one fearing being voted out. Shane
continues to go big for the team, and Sarah is feeling much more comfortable
with everyone and her status in the group. As they enter Alabama for their next
mission, they are all having fun... until Shane slaps Darrell. It was in fun as
they all joked around, prank-calling Shane's friends, but Darrell is not cool
with having someone hit him in the face. He leaves the RV rather than doing
something he will regret later. When the two are paired together in the
balancing challenge, the tensions mount - especially when Shane teases like he's
going to grab Darrell's behind. But by the end of the mission, Shane and Darrell
have worked through their differences and are friends once
again.
Meanwhile, Sarah explains why her family disowned her and how that
has affected her. Rachel is impressed with Sarah's ability to take care of
herself but wonders why she can't have that same energy and commitment during
missions. And again, Sarah fails to complete a mission as she drops from the
challenge. The rest of the team has to compensate for her failure, and it's
wearing on them. Shane thinks it sucks. While the rest of the team continues to
compete, Sarah meets the Thursday Nite Posse, a group that claims to have stolen
the horns off the RV. She calls the police on them, and they eventually get
their horns back, but it's not really enough to satisfy the rest of her
teammates, and Rachel says that the next time they lose a mission, "Sarah is
gone."
Gettin'
naked...
http://www.mtv.com/sitewide/videoplayer/index.jhtml?vid=17702&s0=onair&s1=roadrules&s2=season11&s3=episodeguide&adPth=/adsetup/onair/roadrules/season11/episodeguide/&adPN=index
The gang has their second mission in New Orleans, and they
have to get naked! The six must remove all of their clothing and pose for 15
minutes while an art class sketches them. No one has much of a problem with it -
except for Eric, whose conservative ideas start to creep in. He is uncomfortable
with nudity, uncomfortable with showering with friends, and uncomfortable with
Kendal’s willingness to kiss other people on the streets of
Louisiana.
After the team easily completes the mission, they go out for a
night on the town and have a great night of drunken revelry - just like you’re
supposed to do when you’re on Bourbon Street. Kendal has a great time kissing
girls and giving up pieces of clothing in exchange for beads while she’s out
there. Eric is upset by this behavior and shuts Kendal out - hurting her
feelings in the process. After a few days of them ignoring each other, Eric
realizes that he still cares about her and they make up. They decide to spend
some time together away from the group so that they can get to know each other
as individuals and see what they really like about each other.
Shane
and Darrell share a moment.
The gang rolls into Texas
for the Dean's List Bungee. They have to find pairs of people to jump with them
that have something in common (like a librarian and a student with overdue
library books...get it? Good!). It proves more difficult than it seems as they
have trouble finding a physics professor to jump with Sarah. Which is probably
the worst thing to happen as Sarah is gung ho about this mission. She wants to
go "balls to the wall" on her bungee. Eventually she finds a physics prof to
join in and give us an excellent explanation of gravitational force and kinetic
energy that might have been about bungee jumping or might have been his recipe
for meatloaf. Does anybody know anything about Physics? So the team completes
the mission and wins more prize money but they are informed that they can win
some trip money if they complete a mini-mission. Unable to find a dean to jump
with them, they go with an athletics coach to get the lesser cash award. Which
sucks because they are desperate for some real money. Kendal explains they've
been surviving on baked potatoes and not much else and Darrell has taken to
rummaging through the trash for a meal.
Meanwhile, Shane's not confused
about his sexuality but everybody else is. Sarah remarks that he's completely
homosexual during the day but heterosexual at night. Shane reveals however that
it has more to do with just being out of his element and not having other gay
men to talk to and interact with. Plus he came out to his parents right before
he left for this trip and dealing with that is adding tension and frustration in
his life. And it probably doesn't help matters much that Darrell doesn't
consider him his friend because Shane is gay. The two get the chance to bond a
bit though when they both enter a strip contest at a gay club. The goal is to
make some money and the 200 dollar 1st place prize is enough for Darrell to get
past his homophobia for a night. Shane wins first and Darrell gets second and
the two make a connection that gets Darrell past his prejudice. The two are
friends and hopefully will stay that way.
Items Shane has in
his Backpack
Polaroid Photo of Ronnie:
He bought it the night we
met each other, and I just like it for the sake that anyone likes photos. He's
beautiful and I had an awesome time hanging out with him. It's nice to look back
at and remember.
American Eagle Swim
Trunks:
God, I love a beach, and I love board shorts. These
symbolize everything I wanted to do on this trip--party and have a good time.
P.S. Did I mention I love the beach? See the connection--beach/board shorts?
