Vicar Blackmail Victim
A
gay vicar from London has claimed he is the subject of a blackmail hate
campaign that has forced him into hiding.
Father Neil Follett, 50,
took up his post as vicar of St Paul`s in Knightsbridge, central London,
two months ago, after the parish advertised for a new vicar of ‘good
social standing’.
He separated from his wife, Pamela, just before
Christmas and recently told the parochial church council that he was
gay.
Scotland Yard confirmed they were investigating allegations of
blackmail.
Melissa Hutchings, a spokeswoman for the Diocese of
London, said: "Police are investigating a crime in which this vicar was a
victim. He has been advised by police to leave the parish for the time
being for his own welfare.”
Father Follett, a captain in the Royal
Artillery before becoming a vicar, has been given a month off while police
investigate the claims.
