DontAmend.com Applauds Mass. Court Decision, Urges
Senator John Kerry and All Democratic Presidential Candidates to Have the
Courage to Support Same-Sex Marriage
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Supreme Court
of Massachusetts, by upholding that nothing less then the word "Marriage" for
same-sex unions will be acceptable, today validated last year's Lawrence
v. Texas Supreme Court decision that the gay
community has the right to "Equal protection under the law." Part of the
Massachusetts decision states:
"The dissimilitude between the terms 'civil marriage' and
'civil union' is not innocuous; it is a considered choice of language that
reflects a demonstrable assigning of same sex, largely homosexual, couples to
second class status."
Robin Tyler, National
Co-Chair of DontAmend.com, a project of the Equality Campaign, says "The
Democratic Presidential Candidates need to stop hedging on this issue, even
though it will be "the wedge issue" in the upcoming Presidential
election.
They need to have the courage to run on a platform of FULL
civil rights for everyone, including marriage,
and stop compromising our rights because they think
it will lose them the election. Great leadership requires
great courage, and if they are to be considered leaders, they need to
exhibit this courage, and stop hiding behind national
polls.
They need to stop calling for 'civil unions' because, as
the Massachusetts Supreme Court said today, civil unions are separate, but
nowhere near equal to marriage. They are a form of marriage
segregation which does not extend to all of the rights and responsibilities
that come with the civil contract referred to as marriage. It is akin
to sitting at a lunch counter in Selma, Alabama, during the civil rights
movement but only being allowed to order an appetizer.
This year, Valentine's Day, Sat., Feb. 14, will be
celebrated with romance, roses and resistance. Activists who support same sex
marriage will be holding rallies all over the United States to celebrate the
Massachusetts court decision, and to activate and energize against any attempt
to pass an anti-gay Constitutional Amendment, whether it be at state or federal
level.
