Tampa, Florida - Hillsborough County Commissioner
Ronda Storms says she's getting been mostly praise, and a lot of criticism over
her proposal for the county to not promote gay pride, but she's convinced she's
doing what the people she represents want her to do.
Commissioner
Ronda Storms:
"Go out to the unincorporated part of the county and
just stop folks and say do you believe Hillsborough County people should promote
gay pride. Ask it exactly the way the message was done and get the response. I
am confident that the vast majority of Hillsborough County residents would say
no, Hillsborough County government should not promote gay pride."
10 News Reporter Dave Balut:
"Did you do a survey of
county residents, people in your district before you did this, some gay and
lesbians think this is Ronda Storms bringing her personal agenda to county
government?"
Commissioner Storms:
”The vast majority of
Hillsborough County residents do not support the promotion by Hillsborough
County government of gay pride. How do you know that? I've been re-elected every
single time by a vast majority."
At a church Monday night more than
500 gay and lesbian supporters expressed their anger about Hillsborough County's
policy to not promote gay pride.
Reporter Dave Balut:
"Do
you care that gay and lesbians feel upset about
this?"
Commissioner Storms:
"I'm so sorry that they're
upset about it. Really? Really. We disagree but that's ok because we disagree on
a lot of things with a lot of people. We can't agree with everybody all the
time."
Gay and lesbians are planning a protest, and they're
considering a lawsuit to overturn the policy.
Reporter Dave Balut:
"Do you have a concern at all that this could end up costing taxpayers
money?
Commissioner Storms:
"No concern whatsoever
because I believe that the vast majority of Hillsborough County residents do not
want Hillsborough County government to promote gay pride."
Supporters
of the gay and lesbian community plan a march in Tampa this Sunday at 4 p.m.
They’ll start at the downtown library and end at the County Center.
