On Sunday, April 4th winter residents Carrie Stone and Elisia Ross make this political issue a personal quest as they begin a cross-country bicycle ride in support of equal civil marriage rights.
Stone and Ross, who are grandmothers and lesbian life-partners, will hop on their bicycles to train for their cross-country equality awareness campaign on the Rainbow Ride Across America.
This is the second cross-country Rainbow Ride for Ross and Stone. Last year they rode from St. Augustine Florida to San Diego California.
This year, on May 2, they will meet in San Francisco with marriage equality organizers and elected officials, including Mayor, Gavin Newsom, for a Rainbow Ride Rally where they will speak to the community about their mission.
After the rally, they will embark on the 2004 Rainbow Ride Across America, riding east for 3800 miles to Rehoboth Beach Delaware.
On the way to Delaware, Carrie and Elisia will make stops in towns and cities to speak about the harm caused to gay and lesbian families who are denied rights and protections granted only by civil marriage.
In addition to San Francisco, the couple will speak in Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver, Topeka, St. Louis, Springfield, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York City, Washington DC and Rehoboth Beach.
As they ride, Stone and Ross will carry the energy and hope from San Francisco into America's heartland where anti equality forces have been successful in passing mean-spirited laws in an effort to break the spirit of the gay and lesbian community.
Carrie and Elisia will be leaving for the Rainbow Ride Across America at 11:30 am, Sunday, April 4th, 2004, at the Pinellas trail adjacent to the Wal-Mart on the corner of 38th Avenue N. and Tyrone Boulevard in St Petersburg Florida. Please come by to encourage them and show your support.
