It's Time to Take Action Against the Federal Marriage
Amendment!

Dear DontAmend Tampa Supporters
Today, March 3, the Senate
Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution held their first
meetings on the Federal Marriage Amendment, FMA. A
majority of those who spoke at this meeting, were
supporters of
the FMA. Proponents for passage of this anti-gay
rights constitutional amendment are taking to the phones and sending email messages to express their support for adding
discrimination of GLBT's to the U.S. Constitution. We
must be do the same and express our strong opposition to the FMA. Now is the time to
make that call and send that email message to members of
the Senate and House Judiciary
committees.
Contrary to claims that the amendment would only serve to
protect the sanctity of marriage and still allow
individual states to pass legislation to allow civil
unions, it's a misconception or blatant distortion by the
supporters of the FMA. It does not stop
with adding that, "Marriage in the United States shall consist
only
of the union of a man and a woman". It goes further to include, "Neither this Constitution or the constitution
of any State, nor state or federal law,
shall be construed to require that marital status or the
legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or
groups.' Simply put, this constitutional amendment would
permanently strip the right of any state from extending equal marriage rights to
same-sex couples. It could
go even further by invalidating existing domestic
partner and civil union laws.
The full ramifications that passage of this
constitutional amendment on marriage equality and
rights for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender
Americans could be devastating. We can not allow this amendment to our
constitution to be passed without a fight
