Ellis Rubin to File
Historic Federal Lawsuit for Same Gender Marriage Against US Attorney
General on Tuesday, July
20, 2004.
TAMPA BAY, Fla., July 15 /PRNewswire/ --
On the heels of the stunning defeat of the Federal Marriage Amendment yesterday,
attorney Ellis Rubin will be filing an historical lawsuit on behalf of Rev.
Nancy Wilson, of Metropolitan Community Church, and her wife, Dr. Paula
Schoenwether, formerly a family marriage counselor, who were married in
Massachusetts a few weeks ago.
Mr. Rubin, will be filing
against the US Attorney general who is in charge of enforcing Federal Laws and
against a similar state official in Florida, at the Federal Courthouse in Tampa
on Tuesday, July 20th at 3 PM.
Although this will be Mr.
Rubin's 6th lawsuit against the state and federal laws banning same gender
marriage, this will be the first lawsuit in the nation to be filed on behalf of
a lesbian or gay couple, to have their legal marriage in Massachusetts
recognized by another state.
Robin Tyler, the Executive
Director of dontamend.com, has been friends of the couple for decades, and asked
Mr. Rubin to represent the couple who wanted to file this
lawsuit.
"We do not have equal protection under the law, and
we will continue to sue across this country, until the Supreme Court of the
United States finally grants us full marriage equality," says Ms. Tyler.
We are honored to have an attorney of Mr. Rubin's experience and stature working
with us.
Rev. Nancy Wilson and Metropolitan Community Churches have been
working on this issue for decades, so it is fortuitous that Nancy and Paula
would be the first case of its kind to be
filed
