(Los Angeles) Actor Trev Broudy has regained consciousness, but doctors say it is too early to tell if he suffered permanent brain damage. The 33 year old gay performer was beaten by two men wielding a baseball bat and a metal pipe in West Hollywood on September 1 in what police have officially labeled a hate crime.
Broudy, who appeared in the film The Fluffer, had been in a coma since the attack. His condition has now been upgraded from critical to fair.
Police said he had been struck repeatedly on the head. Broudy underwent two emergency surgeries on his brain. Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center say Broudy will begin to receive physiotherapy this week, but stress it is still to early to know if he suffered any permanent mental impairment as a result of the attack.
A spokesperson for the hospital said Broudy is now conscious and has been taken off his respirator. The first thing he asked his family was how his dog is doing.
The attack took place in front of a popular restaurant in the heart of the gay neighborhood. Broudy and a friend, Edward Lett, 22, had spent the evening together and were hugging goodbye on the street when the men began beating them
Lett was treated for minor injuries, and released from hospital.
Three suspects, including the driver of the getaway car remain at large.
All three are described by police as African-American. The first suspect, who attacked Broudy with a baseball bat , is described as in his 20s, between 5' 5" and 6' 2" tall, and having a slim or average build. Witnesses said he was wearing a dark skullcap and a dark baggy T-shirt and pants.
The second suspect, who was armed with a pipe, is described as an 18- to 28-year-old, 6' tall with short black hair, possibly in a cornrows. He was wearing an oversized, white T-shirt, dark baggy jeans.
Following the attack they escaped in a light brown or faded red 1987-1988 Nissan Sentra four-door, driven by the third man. The car bore California plates possibly containing "3SDO."
