Taxpayer Subsidies for Religious Schools.

Both the House and Senate are in the final stages of a pitched battle
over the creation of a pilot voucher program that could set the stage for a
national voucher program.
The pilot program in the nation's capital
would allow taxpayer funds to subsidize religious schools and other
private institutions. While proponents of the program argue that it will
give children a choice of education, the choice would only be available to a
small segment of the children: religious schools and other private schools are
not required to comply with many federal civil rights laws and can exclude
students based on their religion, gender, learning or physical disabilities.
Consequently this program would funnel taxpayer funds into private schools that
discriminate in accepting students.
This is one of the closest votes in
recent memory: your elected representatives need to hear that you do not want
them to support taxpayer funds for religious schools.

The government should
not be in the business of telling people where they can or cannot go. This
principle was enshrined in the Constitution and allows us all to travel around
the world as tourists, business partners, teachers and adventurers. And
yet because of outdated and unconstitutional thinking, Americans are not able to
travel to Cuba.
Legislation before the House would remove this
restriction on travel and bring the country's policies in line with 21st century
thinking and the Constitution.
