Dear R. Zeke Fread
We're writing to you today because you have lent your
support to our efforts to help Bert Lofton stay with the only family he's ever
known. Bert is the little boy that the State of Florida threatened to take
away because of Florida's law outlawing adoption by lesbian and gay
families.
It's been a while since you've heard from us, so we wanted to
fill you in on three things that have been going on:
1) Bert is
still with his family. We hope it will stay that way at least until the
case is decided, probably early next year.
2) Our appeal of last summer's
ruling that upheld Florida's anti-gay adoption law will be argued in Miami the
week of November 11. We'll be posting more information about this on
LetHimStay.com and on aclu.org as time for the argument nears
3) Finally,
we would like to ask for your help again. The Governor of Florida has
announced that he will nominate someone who in the past has said that he is
opposed to gay parenting of any kind to head the Florida Department of Children
and Families. Many of you wrote the Governor to let him know how wrong you
feel Florida's law banning gay adoption is -- since www.LetHimStay.com started, more than
300,000 letters have been sent. We ask you to take time once again to urge
both the Governor and his choice to head the Department that the ban is foolish
and harmful to Florida's children. You can do that by clicking on one of
these two links.
Thanks very much for your support. We'll
keep you posted on further developments with Bert's case.
