The Dignity for All Students Act (S.B. 1498) would put into place policies and laws that would protect students from harassment, discrimination, and violence in school. Students would be protected beyond current protections if the abuse was based on real or perceived identity or expression of race, color, religion, national origin, marital status, sex, gender, disability or sexual orientation.
It is the right of every student to feel safe in school. It is the right of every student to be provided a safe and comfortable learning environment. It is the responsibility of government to ensure the schools create this environment.
Sen. Sebesta's Education Committee colleague, State Sen. Anna Cowin, seems to disagree. Even though the bill has bi-partisan support, Sen. Cowin has bottled it up in the Committee on Education. Her tactics have stalled a good bill that would protect ALL of Florida's students.
Call Sen. Jim Sebesta today. Tell him that as a constituent you find his colleagues tactics appalling. Tell him to stop letting Sen. Cowin play games with Florida's children and provide them the safe space they deserve.
State Sen. Jim Sebesta can be reached at (850)487-5075, (727)563-0377, (727)217-7088 or (813) 221-6044.
Sen. Sebesta deserves to hear from his constituents. Florida students deserve to have a safe place to learn. Since they don't have a vote, or a voice, it is up to you.
