SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- Michael E. Phelps, boys basketball coach at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, is scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court today on charges that he molested a boy more than 30 years ago.
Phelps, 57, of San Leandro, who reportedly has the most wins as a boys high school basketball coach in state history, is scheduled to surrender to authorities this morning at the Alameda Police Department, according to police Lt. Jim Brock.
He will be booked and detained in the city jail until his arraignment at the George E. McDonald Hall of Justice in Alameda at 1:30 p.m.
Brock said Alameda police began the investigation into Phelps in May when the alleged victim came to police.
"It takes a lot of courage for an adult to come forward with that information now," Brock said.
The alleged crimes occurred in the cities of Alameda, San Leandro and Oakland in the late 1960s, Brock said.
Alameda police conducted the investigation because the alleged victim lived in the island city at the time he says he was molested.
Alameda police presented the case to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office in December for possible charging. On Wednesday, prosecutors charged Phelps with two counts of a lewd and lascivious act on a child under the age of 14.
A $120,000 arrest warrant was then issued for Phelps.
At the time of the alleged molestations, Phelps was a student at California State University at Hayward, worked as a referee for the Catholic Youth Organization league and served as coach of the Oakland Cubs Babe Ruth League youth baseball team, Brock said.
Brock said that the charges involve one alleged victim but that the investigation remains open.
"One of the things the victim was concerned about was that this man continued to be around children as a coach," Brock said. He encouraged anyone with information on the case to contact Alameda police.
Phelps has been coach at Bishop O'Dowd for nearly 25 years and recently was credited with his record-setting 830th victory, despite being placed on administrative leave by the school in early January.
The school's athletic director did not return a phone call seeking comment today.
