(New York City) It may not be the 'trial of the century', but it may turn out to be the most bizarre. Charles Bell is suing his former boss, aging hotel tycoon Leona Helmsley for $40 million dollars alleging he was fired because he is gay.

Helmsley, dubbed the Queen Of Mean more than two decades ago because of her treatment of employees, denies the charges. Her lawyers ended their first week defending her against Bell by painting him as the "Queen Of Perversion".

On the stand were two chambermaids from the ritzy Park Lane Hotel.

Bell was given a suite in the hotel in which to live, a perk as manager of the Helmsley property. The chambermaids who had to clean it likened it to a den of gay iniquity, strewn with used condoms, dildos and other sex toys.

Helmsley's lawyers used the two women to chip away at testimony Bell had given earlier in the suit. He had told the court that he never left sex toys or condoms out in his apartment. He also denied having a wild New Year's Eve party, calling it a "small and elegant gathering of 20 men and women."

The chambermaids begged to differ. Whether the direct testimony about what someone does on their own time in their own apartment will have a bearing on the outcome is unknown, but the women did hurt Bell's credibility legal experts say.

One of the chambermaids, Roselyn Lee, told the court that the first time she went to clean Bell's suite: "There were condoms all over the place. An artificial penis was there on the night table. But I put my gloves on and I cleaned the room."

She testified she also said she found bloody linens in the suit.

She found the place in much the same condition on a second occasion and testified she refused to enter the room again.

Khady Kandji was then given the cleaning assignment. She also said she found used condoms and a bloody sheet. The dildo was on display every time she said.

On one occasion, she testified, she opened the door to find a man sleeping on a sofa and another lying naked on the floor. And on Valentine's Day, Kandji said, she stumbled on a party of 10 men dressed in black leather, in a room decorated with roses.

In earlier bizarre testimony, a witness for Bell testified that Helmsley called actor Tom Cruise gay , and another told the court that the 82 year old Helmsley had gone wild after learning a man she believed was romantically interested in her was gay.
