Vote No on Rejected Extremist Judicial Nominees
President Bush has opened his drive to nominate and confirm 100 conservative judges by spring with the resubmission of two judicial nominees who were rejected last year by the Judiciary Committee because of serious concerns about their records. Mr. Bush is counting on bloc voting by Republicans and an unwillingness of Democrats to be confrontational to guarantee the approval of these controversial individuals. They should again be rejected as unsuitable. Several senators have announced their willingness to filibuster. They need our support now more than ever.
Judge Charles W. Pickering, a protégé of Sen. Trent Lott, was nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The Judiciary Committee rejected his nomination because of his disturbing record on racial, civil rights and choice issues. Judge Priscilla Owen was also nominated for a lifetime seat on the Fifth Circuit. The Judiciary Committee rejected her based on a record that featured attacks to reproductive freedom, workers’ rights and consumers’ rights.
If approved, these nominees will severely damage our judiciary and will embolden Mr. Bush to nominate even more extreme judges. They should again be rejected, and senators should use the filibuster if necessary.
Urge your senators to protect the values of civil rights, freedom and reproductive choice by blocking the nominations of Charles Pickering and Priscilla Owen. Urge them to announce their opposition immediately and their support for a filibuster if required.
Our First Victory of 2003!
Yesterday, President Bush signed a bill to extend unemployment benefits for more than 2 million people, including those who lost their benefits three days after Christmas.
ActForChange activists contributed to this campaign by sending over 13,000 e-mails to House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, urging him to make extending unemployment benefits the first priority of business when Congress reconvened in January.
Thanks for speaking out through ActForChange. We look forward to working with you to create even more victories in 2003!
Thank you for speaking out on issues that matter. Together, we can make a difference.
