(Atlanta, Georgia) The president of Morehouse College, the scene of a violent attack on a student, said the school is not homophobic.
A sophomore has been charged with aggravated assault in the baseball bat beating. The suspect allegedly told police the victim looked at him too long in the shower at the Morehouse dorm where they both lived.
The victim, whose name is being withheld, suffered a fractured skull and underwent emergency surgery. He is recovering now at the college infirmary.
Since the beating, students say their efforts to discuss it in public forums have been quashed at least twice.
Officials canceled one forum to talk about the issue. Students proceeded to meet anyway.
The University then suspended the Student Government Association activities for the rest of the semester over the forum.
The refusal of the university to discuss the attack and the motive behind it drew national attention. The Human Rights Campaign in Washington asked Morehouse officials to address the issue publicly as a hate crime that will not be tolerated on campus.
On the weekend, Morehouse president Walter Massey reinstated the SGA and agreed to allow them to speak during a campus-only forum scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.
"Homophobia is not a new topic at Morehouse," Massey said.
"Only by having people share their experiences can we understand how best to adjust our programs to ensure that we clearly convey the message that no violent or abusive behavior of any kind is acceptable or will be tolerated at Morehouse."
