October 18, New York: Renee Barrett, injured in the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre has died of her injuries.
Barrett was a member of MCC New York. She leaves behind her life partner of Enez Cooper and her 18-year-old son, Eddie, who lived with them.
Renee was an employee of Cantor Fitzgerald, and was in Tower 1 at the time of the attacks. Though critically burned she escaped the building prior to its collapse, and had been hospitalized at Cornell-Presbyterian Hospital.
The total number of GLBT lives lost in the attack may never be known.
In addition to Barrett, 9 gays and one lesbian are known to have died in the attacks.
31 year old Mark Bingham believed to be one of the passengers on United flight 33 who attempted to take on the hijackers shortly before the plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field.
The first officer American flight 77 which slammed into the Pentagon was David Charlebois, a member of the gay pilots association. Also on that flight was Joe Ferguson, a 39 year old worker for the National Geographic Society.
On United flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles were a gay family, Daniel Brandhorst, Ronald Gamboa, and their son, David Brandhorst. David was only 3. Graham Berkeley, a 37 year old tech exec was also on the flight. He was en route to a conference in Los Angeles. The plane was one of the pair which crashed into the World Trade Centre.
On board the other plane which hit the skyscrapers was 41 year old Jeffrey Collman a 41 year old flight attendant. Also on board was lesbian Carol Flyzik.
41 year old John Keohane was at work near the World Trade Centre when the planes hit. He was killed by falling debris.
68 year old Mychal Judge a member of Dignity the organization of gay Catholics, a priest, and a chaplain for the New York Fire Department was killed during the collapse of the towers while giving the last rites to a dying firefighter.
Funeral services for Barrett have not been released.
