The first images of the events just after the first airlinerstruck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, N. Y.
At 8:45 a.m. EDT on the morning of September 11, 2001, the first
of four hijacked planes, American Airlines Flight 11, crashes into
the north tower of the World Trade Center. A service crew on the
streets of Manhattan had a camera and captured this horrifying and
historical event.

Debris from the plane crash could be seen on the plaza outside
Tower One as the evacuees made it to the ground floor.

and released. (JOHN LABRIOLA)

Hundreds of the firefighters who entered the building or responded
to the scene are missing and presumed dead. The day marked the
largest loss of firefighters in a single incident in U.S. history.

Firefighter Mike Kehoe, from Staten Island, assists in the evacuation
effort in a stairwell of Tower One. Fellow firefighter Bobby Annunziato
at Engine 28 in Manhattan said Kehoe escaped before the towers collapsed.

stairs toward the fires fed by jet fuel. (JOHN LABRIOLA)

Although some were able to make it out of the building, even
from the top floors thousands are still missing. (JOHN LABRIOLA)
