(September 2, Miami) The organization trying to overturn Broward County's gay rights law is forging petition signatures and soliciting people who are not registered voters, according to a complaint filed with the State Attorney's Office.

Equal Rights Not Special Rights needs to collect 62,143 signatures by Sept. 17 to put a referendum on the ballot that would strike down the gay rights law.

The complaint was filed by gay rights group Americans for Equality. AE has been monitoring the petition.

Political consultant Richard Giorgio told the Miami Herald that  petition gatherers are seeking signatures from people who are not registered to vote and then handing them voter applications. The first line of the petition says: ``I am a registered voter of Broward County.''

Giorgio also said people are copying names and addresses from another petition that calls for smaller class sizes and forging their signatures on the Equal Rights Not Special Rights petition.

Both allegations carry a jail sentence up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine on conviction.

Questions about the validity of petition signatures have hampered a similar campaign to overturn a gay rights ordinance in Miami-Dade County, where the State Attorney's Office is investigating possible signature fraud, and in other areas of the US.
